Adieu to Anna

It is a sad post this month.  Our dear Anna has made the momentous decision to leave Loose Threads.  The travel and commitments of her life have moved her in new and exciting directions.  She has been a constant mainstay of our group and will be sorely missed.

Her talent and dedication over the years has inspired us all and challenged each of us to explore this quilt world in new a unique ways.  Many of her pieces have inspired each of us to try new techniques and to push ourselves in new artistic directions.

Anna, like many of us started as a traditional quilter, and she still creates traditional quilts and teaches others to do the same.  Somewhere along the way she discovered the joy and freedom of the art quilt.  With her background experience in art, art quilts re-awakened that desire and she has studied and explored just about every technique that is employed in the making of art quilts.  And I think that at times these pieces give her the most joy and feeling of fulfilment when it comes to making a quilt.

For an artist, more often then not, it is the process of making a thing that gives us joy.  Even if we do not like the piece when it is finished, or even if we felt frustrated through the entire process,  we still feel the joy in the making.  Anna, to me is that ardent artist; the Explorer.

WE WILL MISS YOU.

She even finished her current challenge ahead of us so that she could leave on a high note.  This piece was inspired by Lesley Cunningham's inspiration board:

And They're Here.....

Last night our group met for the revealing of our second round of work for the year.  We are using inspiration boards that we each created.  We pass those around so that each member can create a piece of art inspired by that board.  This is such a great exercise and stretches each of us to further explore the directions that we are working in and to also get us to work ‘outside the box’.  This round was particularly expressive of moving us in different and new directions.

We would also like to welcome our newest member, Lesley Cunningham.  She will be a great addition to our group for her inspiration and insight.

So without further adieu here are our creations for this round:

Featured Artist at Best of the Valley Quilt Show

Stones in a Bowl 18"L x 12"W x 10"H
Have you ever wondered why we choose to do what we do? Whatever 'it' is we make these choices in our lives and we either love 'it' or questioned our choice. I think that those of us who choose to work in the arts never question the choice, but maybe the obsessive nature of the choice. And what better way to explore that than by applauding one of our members.

We are applauding her today because she was the featured artist at the Best of the Valley Quilt Show presented in the Central Valley in Lindsay, California.

Sara is an artist. She has a great eye and most importantly a great 'knack' at editing her work. She is a modernist by nature. She is able to pare an idea down to its 'bottom line'. That is a difficult thing to do - especially when you are working on your own pieces. I think that her ability to do this is that obsessive nature that artist's utilize. She uses that energy to work out her ideas and she will stick to it until she finds the right path. Amazing!

Sara's work is primarily abstract. She uses color and texture in an extraordinarily delicate and minimalist way. Her pieces are visually pleasing and often carry a little witticism within them.

This is our inaugural post for our art group Loose Threads.  This group has been meeting, learning, teaching, and creating with each other for a number of years now, but we really felt a need for our work to be seen by more people then just us.  We hope that you enjoy the fiber art the we share on this blog.

Last night was out first 'reveal' and critique of the year.  We are challenging ourselves this year with story boards or 'imgination' boards which each of us made.  Throughout the year we will pass our story boards around so that each of us can develop a fiber art piece.  We are working on drawing inspiriation from each board.  So one person may respond to the color on a specific board, and another may respond to specific objects on the board.  It is a very open challenge for us.  And it is harder then one might expect.  This is why we give ourselves two months to develop and create a fiber art piece.  And then we learn and help each other through our critique process.

Below are the pieces that we have created this time around:

Anna Koelewyn

Barbara Sindlinger

Grace Hoya

Karen Taber

Sara Kelly did three pieces.  Her final one is still a work in progress and I think that all of agree that we can not wait to swee it finished and see what choices she made.
